Maintenance

Maintaining Your Emergency Lights Is an Essential Part of Your System

Installing emergency lighting is only half the job. Under BS 5266-1:2025, every system must be properly maintained throughout its working life, not just switched on and forgotten about. Regular testing, servicing and record-keeping are what actually keep your building compliant and, more importantly, keep people safe if the mains power fails.

For most premises, this means monthly function tests, a full annual duration test, and ongoing checks on batteries, luminaires and central battery systems where fitted. The “responsible person” for the building, whether that’s a facilities manager, landlord or business owner, is legally obligated to see this maintenance happens and to keep a logbook as evidence.

Neglecting maintenance is one of the most common ways emergency lighting systems fail an inspection, often down to flat batteries or simply missing test records. The good news is that with the right routine in place, most issues are easy to catch early and put right before they become a problem.

Below you’ll find our guides covering everything from testing schedules and battery replacement to record keeping requirements and common mistakes to avoid, so you can keep your system compliant and reliable all year round.
